Local Author Brings NKY's Golden Era of Sports to LifeUntitled design 3

Relive the excitement of Northern Kentucky’s sports glory days during the next NKY History Hour, as Behringer-Crawford Museum welcomes author Charlie Coleman to discuss his latest book, "NKY Sports Legends of the 1950s."

The virtual presentation will take place Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. on Facebook Live and Zoom. Coleman will share stories behind some of the region’s most celebrated athletes from the 1950s, many of whom helped shape Northern Kentucky’s proud sports legacy.

The talk will also spotlight the exhibit currently on display at Behringer-Crawford Museum, inspired by the book, featuring photos, memorabilia and more that capture the spirit of the era.

Growing up in Newport, Charlie Coleman was deeply influenced by legendary figures such as Stan Arnzen, Charlie True, Sherrill Morgan, and Bob Vanderpool, who fueled his passion for the game. His book, edited by James C. Claypool, highlights the deep connection between Northern Kentucky’s high schools and their star athletes, many of whom became local heroes. Copies of Northern Kentucky Sports Legends of the 1950s are available for purchase in the BCM gift shop.

Charlie Coleman is a graduate of Newport High School and he earned a B.A. in History and Government from Eastern Kentucky University in 1970, followed by a Master’s in Education from Northern Kentucky University in 1978 and a Rank I certification from Xavier University in 1983.

He spent much of his professional career at Bellevue High School, serving as a teacher, assistant principal, athletic director and football coach. As head football coach, he earned the most wins in school history with 91 victories. 

He served as a Campbell County Commissioner from 2012 to 2016 and is a proud member of multiple halls of fame, including the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame, Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame, Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and the Bellevue High School Hall of Fame.

Coleman is currently a board member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and is the host and producer of the NKY Sports Legends television show on ICN6, which he has led for 10 years.

He and his wife Cheryl have three children and nine grandchildren.
